This WCE member workshop served as an introduction to governance for women engineers at all career stages.

Ever wondered if you could contribute to your organization, profession, or community through board service? Boards across Canada are seeking intelligent, motivated, dedicated directors, yet women, individuals from marginalized groups, and young people remain under-represented in the boardrooms where vital decisions are made.

Leading this workshop was  Shona McGlashan (she/they), the principal at McGlashan Consulting Inc. Shona is an award-winning senior leader with over 25 years of experience guiding governance, public affairs, diversity & inclusion, and workplace wellbeing functions across both sides of the Atlantic.

The session explored why you might consider adding board service to your career and community involvement goals and provided practical tips on how to get started.

The workshop covered the following topics:

  • What you need to know about governance
  • Why get involved in governance and what’s in it for you
  • Where you can make governance impact
  • A toolkit for board search and outreach
  • Preparing for board recruitment conversations
  • How to make an impact as a board director from day one

No advance reading or preparation was required. The session was interactive, with participants sharing insights, questions, and thoughts.
