On September 28th, 2021 two of our very own WCE members presented to a group of professional newly immigrated women at Impact North Shore (formerly North Shore Multicultural Society) on their experience with becoming a Professional Engineer in Canada after immigrating. Shahrzad Pedram, P.Eng. presented a young immigrant’s perspective in navigating the world from youth into adulthood and professional life, as well as the challenges and opportunities that came with growing up in the Iranian diaspora in Canada. Sonia D’Ambra, Ph.D., P.Eng. talked about her experience of moving from Rome, Italy, with her cat to work for an international consulting firm in Vancouver, speaking very little English. Her immigration journey took her from teaching university courses in Rome to doing open pit design for mines in the cold Canadian arctic and the hot Brazilian forest. Sonia also shared what she has learned as an employee and a hiring manager about professional working women, and strategies to be successful in the Canadian marketplace.
